FTC & Credit Card Use by Children

The FTC recognizes the use of a credit card as one legitimate way to confirm parental consent (see http://www.ftc.gov/privacy/privacyinitiatives/childrens.html ), especially if there is no public disclosure of information about a child. Accordingly, use of the credit card alone is confirmation of the parent's approval of the charge of the minor. Moreover, it is not uncommon for minors to use their parents' credit cards, with permission, to make purchases, and the fact that the purchase is made with a parent's credit card, and not in cash, is evidence that the minor is not attempting to conceal the purchase from the parent.
